Walk out the west gate of Harold D. Ritter Park at 301 W Lochmere Drive on a Saturday in September, take the recycled-asphalt path along Swift Creek for about a mile, and you will find yourself standing behind the lawn seating at Koka Booth Amphitheatre while Rainbow Kitten Surprise sound-checks. No parking lot. No shuttle. No twenty-dollar surface lot on Regency Parkway. That short, shaded walk is the argument this post is built around.
Lochmere is one of the only Cary neighborhoods where a national touring venue, a Wednesday-evening concert series, and a full HOA amenity calendar are all inside a normal walking or biking radius from your own front door. Late summer and early fall is when that geography pays off.
Most guides to the area treat these as three separate destinations. From inside Lochmere, they are one continuous weekend.
The Concert Calendar You Can Reach Without Driving
Koka Booth Amphitheatre sits at 8003 Regency Parkway, less than a mile from the western edge of Lochmere by trail. It is owned by the Town of Cary and managed by ASM Global, seats about 7,000, and hosts more than sixty events between April and October, including the NC Symphony Summerfest Series, Hum Sub Diwali, and Oktoberfest.
For residents, the practical question is not "what's playing" but "which nights can I skip the car." Here is the run of shows through late October 2026, paired with the greenway approach that makes the most sense from Lochmere:

The connective tissue is the Swift Creek Greenway itself. It is a paved 1.20-mile trail that runs between the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve and Ritter Park along Swift Creek, and it is the nation's first greenway built entirely of recycled products, including the asphalt surface, stormwater pipes, benches, and signage. At its western end it hands off to the Symphony Lake Greenway, a 1.8-mile paved loop that encircles Symphony Lake and skirts the back of the Koka Booth lawn. AllTrails rates the combined out-and-back at 2.8 miles with a gentle grade under 5 percent, roughly 51 minutes at a walking pace, with regular sightings of bald eagles and turtles along the creek corridor.
The Town of Cary notes that the greenway can close for special events at the Amphitheatre, with signage placed for detours, so on show nights the last quarter mile behind the lawn may reroute through the Regency Parkway sidewalk system.
The Wednesday Nights Most Residents Are Missing
The weeks between big Koka Booth shows are where the Sunset Concert Series at Waverly Place quietly earns its place on a Lochmere calendar. The series runs Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at Waverly Place Park, with dates on the current run including:
- Wednesday, September 2
- Wednesday, September 9
- Wednesday, September 16
Waverly Place sits at 302 Colonades Way, about a mile and a half from most Lochmere addresses, and lists Whole Foods, CineBistro, and Shake Shack among its anchor tenants. It is close enough that a Wednesday walk-over for an hour of music and dinner is a real option rather than a marketing pitch.
Two other dates on the near calendar worth pinning:
- The GRL Market, Saturday August 29, 11 AM to 2 PM at Waverly Place. Women-owned local vendors, outdoor format.
- Christmas in July with QDR, Saturday July 25, 11 AM to 1 PM, with a prize wheel and tickets given away.
New Food At Your Nearest Shopping Center
The Waverly Place dining lineup is genuinely different this year than it was in 2025, and that is worth registering as a resident.
Rise Southern Biscuits and Righteous Chicken is now open at 575 New Waverly Place, Suite 104A, near the Whole Foods entrance, running daily from 7 AM to 2 PM. The concept was born in North Carolina and leans on scratch biscuits and fried chicken sandwiches.
Eastcut Sandwich Bar, the Durham-born sandwich shop that expanded to Raleigh's Iron Works development in 2023, signed a lease at Waverly Place in March 2026 for its third Triangle location, per Triangle Business Journal. The report confirmed the deal but did not include an opening date, so the storefront is a watch-this-space situation through the fall.
They join a lineup that already includes Enrigo Italian Bistro at 575 New Waverly Place Suite 106, on the fountain-facing ground level, plus Shake Shack and Pineapple Sol for brunch. For most Lochmere sub-neighborhoods, this is the closest cluster of new independent openings inside a mile.
The Amenities That Are Only Yours
Some of the best hours in a Lochmere weekend never leave the HOA gate. A few current items from the August 2026 board updates and calendar:
- Food trucks at Lochwood Pool. Gelato Geluna served from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday, August 2. The truck rotation continues through the summer pool season.
- Pickleball Open Play on the six Highlands Club courts, three days a week from June 1 through the end of September. Clinics, lessons, and open play are all in the rotation, and the association describes pickleball as the fastest-growing sport in the neighborhood.
- Court resurfacing on the Highlands pickleball courts ran August 4 through August 13, weather permitting, so the courts should be fresh through the fall.
- Men's Evening Out at the Lochwood tennis courts on Wednesday, August 19, at the site of the popular Quads format. Open to residents new to the neighborhood or new to a racket.
- HOA Board meeting on Tuesday, August 25 at 6:30 PM at the Main Office conference room, 502 Lochmere Drive.
The lakes themselves stay under-explored by a lot of residents. Loch Lomond, the first lake visible entering off Kildaire Farm Road, is ringed by a 1.1-mile walking loop with a gazebo and swing on its east side. The lake hosts a resident pair of swans along with great blue herons and both resident and migrating ducks. Fishing is permitted on all three lakes, boats require an HOA permit decal with a small per-boat sticker fee, only electric trolling motors are allowed, and swimming is not permitted in any of them.
For a longer wander, the gravel trail loop behind Whisperwood Drive drops down to Ann Brunswick Park below Lochmere Lake, where a ten-post disc golf course is laid out through the trees. Most residents do not know it exists.
A Public Alternative When You Want To Bring Guests
Because the internal Lochmere trails, pools, courts, and lakes are for residents and accompanied guests only, out-of-town visitors who want a longer nature walk should be pointed to Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve at 2616 Kildaire Farm Road. It offers about three miles of mulched nature trails through a rare stand of Eastern Hemlocks and other mountain plant species, with scenic overlooks and bird watching. The Swift Creek Greenway from Ritter Park runs right past its northern edge, so the two can be combined into a single morning.
A Sample Fall Saturday Built Only From The Above
Because the point of this post is that these pieces connect, here is what a single September Saturday can look like from a Lochmere driveway, no car required after breakfast:
- Breakfast at Rise Southern Biscuits, walked or biked over via the Kildaire Farm sidewalk.
- Late-morning loop of Loch Lomond, one mile with a gazebo pause.
- Afternoon pickleball Open Play at the Highlands courts.
- Early dinner at Enrigo or Shake Shack at Waverly Place.
- Walk the Swift Creek Greenway west from Ritter Park to Symphony Lake for a 7 PM show at Koka Booth.
- Reverse the greenway walk home under the tree canopy.
The neighborhood was planned in the late 1980s and 1990s across roughly 1,900 homes and two dozen sub-neighborhoods, and the reason the geography works this way is that the master plan built the trails, the lakes, and the amenities before the shopping and the amphitheater grew up around them. A resident who has lived here for a decade may still be under-using it.
